Civic-Political Participation
MUA is a member of Oakland Rising y San Francisco Rising, both dedicated to mobilizing immigrant, working-class and voters of color to promote progressive policies in our cities. On both sides of the Bay, MUA engages in voter education and outreach work twice a year, each election cycle. We go out knocking on doors to inform voters about what's on their local and state ballots, and how it would affect families and working people. We also have the opportunity to speak to voters about current local issues, including housing issues and tenant protections, domestic worker rights, minimum wage increases and other topics.
Oakland Rising
Oakland Rising educates and mobilizes Oakland voters to raise their voices and take charge of the issues that affect our lives. We are a multilingual, multiracial collaboration with deep roots in East and West Oakland neighborhoods, proving that everyday residents, when working together, have the power to change the city. With long-time Oakland families and new neighbors working side by side, we build on Oakland's rich history to build smart, community-based solutions for our vibrant city.
Our current work is based on three main goals, through which we develop the fundamental parts of the infrastructure necessary to build progressive power in Oakland:
- Build a permanent political-electoral infrastructure;
- Exercise and expand our political influence; and
- Align organizations and coordinate with other progressive forces.
Our vision:
We envision an Oakland that realizes our shared dreams of health, happiness, security and opportunity for all. A City that is a paradigm of progress and sustainability, that is a model of what American cities can be in the twenty-first century. We believe we can erase the racial, economic, political, environmental and educational inequalities that have created barriers between us. We believe we can find collective strength in the diversity of our city, and we know that Oakland can reach its full potential when the residents of any neighborhood, the students of any school or the passengers of any bus can help lead our city into the future. We believe that this vision is possible and we will achieve it with every vote, every meeting and every march.
San Francisco Rising
San Francisco Rising is a grassroots alliance that has come together to make lasting change in San Francisco. Our members represent a growing majority in the city – hard-working, low-income communities of color – who contribute to the unique wealth and beauty of this city but have not benefited from its prosperity. We have a long-term vision for the city, and we are going to be part of it, together and for a long time. We are uniting African American, Latino, Chinese and Filipino communities and leaders from across the Bay Area to create a new community-based political infrastructure capable of conducting sophisticated electoral activities every election cycle, and winning.
San Francisco Rising members are grassroots organizations with roots in the city's low-income, working-class communities of color. They share a common vision for San Francisco.
