The Organization Mujeres Unidas y Activas has managed to help thousands of women who have been victims of domestic violence in San Francisco.
For 30 years, this organization has been a refuge for women, Latinas and immigrants.
Recently arrived in the United States, a mother suffered serious problems of domestic violence.
“My husband kept me locked up because he wouldn't let me go out more than two blocks away and more than anything he kept me under surveillance. When I told him I'm pregnant, he comes and says well, I don't know who it is, this baby is not mine, it was because he threatened to kill us,” the woman said.
However, after seeking help through the organization, he managed to move forward.
“It empowered me, it did save me, because I didn't know that I had rights,” he said.
Like her, thousands of women over the years have found support and hope in this organization.
In addition to the help they offer to these women, the organization also works on activism in political and social causes, promoting immigration reform or improving labor protections for domestic workers. They also train counselors to answer their sexual abuse hotline.
“Knowing that on this side there are people who are not going to judge her, they are not going to criticize her, but they are simply going to be able to support her,” said Veronica Nieto.
Through social networks, the organization holds two weekly meetings open to the public to talk about all these topics.
