A new help center opened its doors Wednesday with the goal of offering English classes, workshops on their rights, emotional support, among other things to immigrant women in Union City.

“It has helped me to have all these services offered here to continue growing and strengthening my skills,” explained Lorena, a member of the organization. Mujeres Unidas y Activas.

The organization also offers vocational training and other resources.

“Workshops on domestic violence, sexual assault, the rights of immigrants, the rights of workers,” said Juana Flores, director of the organization.

Part of its goal is to boost civic participation by advocating for the rights to health and safety for domestic workers.

“It has enabled us to participate in making legislative visits to Sacramento to raise the voices of domestic workers,” Lorena said.

Since 2019, they also offer support specifically designed for indigenous women who speak the Mam Mayan language.

“Because they, like us, have the same challenges of language and being immigrants. Then there were almost no services for them, much less translation,” said Lorena.

The organization invites other members of the community to seek support at any of its locations in San Francisco, Oakland and Union City.
