Launch of the MUA Fotonovela
MESSAGE IN MAYA MAM BELOW / TU’J QYOL MAM TKUX TJA’
Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) and NAKA Dance Theater are proud to announce the publication of our first Fotonovela, a booklet of expressive art created by and for MUA members.
Booklets will be available at our outdoor, socially distanced Fotonovela Launch event on March 19, 2022 from 1 to 4 pm at Bandung Books, 2289 International Blvd. in Oakland, CA. This one hour event will take place three times, at 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm, with a brief presentation in Spanish, English and Maya Mam followed by a celebration of the book launch.
The Fotonovela team includes: Adriana Perez, Leticia Garcia, Luciana Rodriguez, Paulina Calmo and Victoria Pablo, in collaboration with NAKA Dance Theater and members of MUA.
Starting in late 2020 and continuing through 2021, we worked as a team with NAKA Dance Theater and MUA, meeting twice a week on Zoom. We grew together and managed to express our emotions in different ways, through dialogue, the body and illustrations. Since our team is made up of people who speak different languages (Maya Mam, Spanish, and English), using illustrations in the zine seemed the most appropriate way to express what we wanted to express without needing to choose a particular language, while still recognizing each person’s languages and traditions. Other members of MUA also contributed their illustrations, helping us to make visible gender issues, social inequalities, and cultural and socio-economic concerns.
The Fotonovela is made up of four sections, which were chosen based on the interests of all the women who participated and the community we represent. In the first section, we focus on what MUA represents. In the second section, we center cultural aspects deeply rooted in our daily life, prioritizing food, customs, traditions of our countries of origin and in the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples. In the third section, we focus on gender issues. And the last section is about migration, focusing on aspects related to personal and emotional experiences that we have had as immigrants.
We are making a digital version of the fotonovela available to all, in the hopes that it will inspire other similar projects for healing and self-expression. The work has given us the strength to keep going. We must not forget that walking together hand-in-hand is easier in a society that sometimes closes its doors on us.
A limited number of full color printed booklets are available for a requested donation of $10-30, plus $5 shipping (please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery). Order your booklet here.
