My name is Beatriz, and I’m from Mexico. I have been a member of Mujeres Unidas y Activas for 10 years. I came to the organization because I felt very lonely. Loneliness made me reunite with my husband and with him I went through domestic violence. MUA is everything, it is our second home, and as long as the office is open we can stay. I have learned that I am not my husband’s property. Anything I do is because it is my decision. I own me.  In the future, I hope to learn how to drive so I can get out and organize members outside San Francisco and Oakland, so they too can learn about their rights as women as as workers, so that they will recognize their strength and not be exploited.
