English Classes
MUA offers a variety of English classes for staff and members
English for Professional Purposes
MUA’s English for Professional Purposes program targets our Spanish-speaking staff. The program consists of two hours of group class during the spring and at least one hour per week of individual tutoring throughout the year. This program aims at fostering the English language development of our staff members through group and individual tasks which are tightly linked to their job descriptions.
Domestic Worker ESL Class
This dynamic, multi-skill building vocational ESL class for domestic workers is comprised of different modules which focus on: searching for and interviewing for jobs; on-the-job communication; salary negotiation; and self-care for domestic workers (in collaboration with SFSU and UCSF). The contents of the modules are decided yearly by our members, and our program is enriched by collaborations with community-based organizations and educational institutions. In 2014, together with the Women’s Building Community Resource Room, we created a computer literacy curriculum aimed at teaching Google Maps, a tool that helps domestic workers get to job interviews and work sites. The Caring Hands ESL class focuses on Caring Hands members but is open to all domestic workers.
Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor ESL Class
MUA offers a multi-skill ESL class for Peer Counselors who graduated from the Sexual Assault Counselor Training and who are participating in an internship program at San Francisco Women against Rape (SFWAR). Class participants learn how to fill out intake forms, accompany survivors to different services in the community, and communicate with their internship supervisors at SFWAR.
